EQUITY represents Vasyl Khmeliuk’s Wife pro bono

A team of EQUITY attorneys is representing Alina Khmeliuk, the wife of the murdered Vasyl Khmeliuk, pro bono (for free).

On January 14, 2019, EQUITY attorneys filed the motion to involve Alina Khmeliuk, the wife of Vasyl Khmeliuk, the murdered employee of the Administration of State Guard, as the victim to the proceeding with the Pechersk Police Division of the Main Department of the National Police in Kyiv.

On January 24, 2019 Kyiv Court of Appeal reversed the decision of a court of the first instance and granted the prosecutor’s appeal according to which suspect Ocheretianyi was detained immediately after the court session.

The restraint measure is without any alternative, that is why the suspect will be in the pretrial detention unit until March 2, 2019.

Obtaining the victim status gives Mrs Khmeliuk a number of rights under CPC of Ukraine, in particular, to give evidence to the investigator, prosecutor, investigating judge, court; to contest decisions, acts and omissions of the investigator, prosecutor, investigating judge, court; to recover damages caused by a criminal offence; to get familiar with case materials; to participate in investigative (search) and other procedural actions; and other rights under art. 56 of CPC of Ukraine.
